We have all heard
that vitamins are good for us. The medical establishment
has traditionally
held a lukewarm stance towards nutritional supplements. Lately,
however, increasing support within the medical community
has
acknowledged the important role that vitamins and supplements
play in maintaining health and preventing disease.
Leading
industry voices, such as the prestigious Journal
of the American Medical Association (JAMA) announced this
year that all adults should take vitamin supplements to help
prevent chronic disease. JAMA further stated that most Americans are not getting enough
key nutrients from their diet. No surprise here, given what
we already know about the typical Western diet.
Nutritional Individuality
Establishing the fact
that we all need supplements is not enough. Our individual
attributes matter in what nutritional
supplements are important to keep us at our best. Attributes
such, gender, weight, age, ancestry, health history, dietary
habits, are but a few of the obvious areas of difference
amongst
individuals. Are we to believe that all of us require
the same kind and level of nutritional supplements? Obviously
not. Dr. Roger Williams, the world-renowned biochemist
told
us 40 years ago that biochemical individuality – the
differences in anatomy and metabolism from person to person
– influence our health.
The truth is that when it comes to nutrition, one
size does not fit all. We are all nutritionally unique. The nutritional
needs between men and woman are completely different. Our
nutritional requirements change as we age. For example, a
woman’s needs change as she approaches menopause when
natural levels of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone
decrease. As men age, they experience a gradual decrease
in
the production of testosterone known as andropause. The nutritional
needs of physically active individuals are not the same as
for those that are more sedentary. The list of exceptions
goes on because we are not only all uniquely different to
start with but we also pass through different nutrition and
health stages as we age.
The typical messages regarding vitamins are fragmented and
confusing. Most vitamin companies would have us believe that
we all need the same thing – as if we are a universe
of identical nutritional clones. They market the merits of
any given vitamin or supplement as if these are substances
that everyone needs in the same daily amounts.
All Vitamins Are Not Created Equal
The same vitamins are not generally
necessary for each and every one of us, but there are some
supplements that are important
staples for most of us. An example is calcium, which is an
important mineral to help keep our bones healthy. As we
grow
older, our bone mass decreases. After the age of 35 our body
tends to begin to lose more bone mass that it creates.
This
accelerates with age. Men between 40 and 50, begin to lose
.5% to .75% bone mass per year, while women tend to lose
twice
that at 1% to 1.5% per year. To visually imagine what this
might look like, bones that were once sturdy begin to resemble
honeycombs, lighter and more fragile in composition. Calcium
supplementation can help , but most calcium supplements
are
derived from a form of calcium that is difficult to digest,
and hence has limited benefit. There are more bioavailable – or more absorbable – forms of calcium, such
as Calcium Hydroxyapatite, derived from seashells, which are
far more effective – but most of us do not know this
and don’t know how to find these more effective forms.
The fact is, that not only is it important to know which supplements
are right for us, but it is also important to know which source
(or type) these vitamins come from to ensure that they work
effectively.
What to Do?
Well if you are rich or famous you
hire a top nutritionist to evaluate your diet, lifestyle,
heredity, exercise habits,
dietary habits, sleep habits, environmental conditions (such
as air quality, sun exposure, etc) and design a custom
program
for you. Top nutritionists, such as Oz Garcia (twice rated
Nutritionist of the year by New York magazine) are highly
sought after and may be difficult for most of us to reach,
particularly if we don’t live in a major metropolitan
area such as New York City.
As our population ages (today there are 70 million Americans
aged 55 or older in the US and the US Census Bureau forecasts
that the age group beginning at age 35 is the fastest growing
segment of the US population over the next 20 years) the
issue
of being proactive about our health grows in importance.
People are more concerned now than ever in maintaining their
health
and preventing disease, particularly with rising health insurance
costs. With the advanced medical technologies and knowledge
that we have today, it is almost certain that we will live
longer. The average lifespan in 1900 was 44 years of age,
in 1982 it was 74 years of age, and it is higher than this
today. Many of us will likely live well into our 80s, 90s
and beyond … the question we must ask ourselves is this
“will we be in good health when we are in the later
stages of our life?”
Nutritional Science Meets the
Information Age
Nutrophy merges the latest advances in health and nutrition
science with the latest in powerful computer technology to
deliver personalized nutritional solutions that are convenient
and cost-effective.
Our objective is to use the latest scientific findings,
best nutritional ingredients and the latest information technology
to deliver a solution that is very precise and easy for you
to use. You simply fill out an intuitive interactive questionnaire
that asks questions regarding your diet, environment, stress,
exercise habits, sleep habits and the like. Upon completing
the questionnaire you receive personalized feedback in the
form of a HealthstyleTM profile which rates how
you are doing along several important axes, such as Diet
& Nutrition, Brain and Mood, and Successful Aging. These
scores
are measured against your personal
potential, so you are not being scored against some fictional
superhuman, but rather how you should be doing for someone
your age and gender.
From there the Nutrophy expert system – NEXTM – makes supplement and general
recommendations which are tailored specifically to you –
like a custom suit, only in this case it’s a customized
nutritional program just for you.
NEX is a compilation of the latest nutritional
findings and was developed by consulting some of the top
nutritional scientists and researchers in the field today.
You can even improve the accuracy of your HealthstyleTM
profile by ordering the bodytraxTM
bio-fluids home kit and submitting some sample body fluids
in the form of saliva and urine to measure some key health
biomarkers, such as:
Cortisol: Cortisol
increases as we are subjected to stress. High
cortisol levels are known to have a negative effect on
our brains, and may be one of the causes in
the rise in Alzheimer’s and other neuro-degenerative
diseases in the US
Free Radical
Activity: Antioxidants
are essential to our body’s defense
against free radicals. Free radicals attack the
cells of our body affecting the cardiovascular, neurological
and immune functions.
Male Hormone Balance:
Measures levels of testosterone and DHEA. Normal sex drive
and muscle mass are just two of the benefits of maintaining
proper testosterone and DHEA levels.
Female Hormone Balance:
Measures levels of estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone
that influence women’s health.
The
supplements recommended are "best of breed" combinations
of the top ingredients in the world today. They are all
thoroughly
tested and formulated by the leading nutritionists in the
field. The same stuff the rich and famous get, but at a
fraction of
the cost, and you don't have to pay for the nutritionist,
to boot!
One great example of the quality, convenience and value
becomes apparent when comparing the Nutrophy multivitamin
to the
popular
Centrum multivitamin. What you find is that you would have
to take an extra 12 other supplements to match the potency
and
ingredients in the Nutrophy multi. You can either consume
2 capsules with Nutrophy, or a total of
14 with Centrum … and the Nutrophy multi comes
at significantly lower cost. This is because many of the
multivitamins
on the market today do not use the most appropriate ingredient
forms, nor the correct dosages, looking to save cost by putting
in very small and ineffective amounts of key ingredients
(for
example the Centrum multivitamin only has
18mcg of vitamin B12, while the Nutrophy multi has 500mcg)
